What is Bruxism?
Bruxism is a condition that involves unconsciously clenching the jaws or grinding the teeth. Both of these issues lead to regular abrasion of the enamel. If left untreated, bruxism can lead to recurrent headaches, neck pain, back pain, joint pain, and even eye pain. Very often, dental treatment of bruxism becomes necessary. Our clinic in Poznań is the best place to undergo this specialist therapy.
How do I know I have bruxism?
Bruxism most often arises as a result of emotional overload, during which there is excessive tension of the jaw muscles. In such a situation, despite the correct anatomical structure, these muscles become too tense. The symptoms of this condition are excessive headaches and facial pains, tooth sensitivity, as well as the feeling of constant tinnitus – ringing sound in the ear. Uncontrolled clenching of teeth can lead to abrasion of the tooth surface, and consequently to their loosening and falling out. In people affected by bruxism, you can notice strongly developed masseter muscles, which makes the face look more square.
Causes of bruxism
Stress is considered to be the biggest cause of bruxism. Most often, it is caused by accumulating emotions, and the body gets rid of them during sleep, by grinding. Bruxism can also be caused by magnesium deficiency, but proper supplementation will improve it. It’s important to treat bruxism as soon as possible, as damaged tooth enamel makes them more susceptible to sensitivity and tooth decay.
What does bruxism lead to?
People who struggle with bruxism experience changes in the jaw and mandible. Unfortunately, this means that inflammation can occur in the area around the teeth and gums, and eventually even tooth loss. In addition, people struggling with bruxism are at risk of developing systemic infection, sepsis or septic shock. It should be added that bruxism is also associated with the formation of inflammatory changes in the mandibular and temporal joints, which in turn leads to their degeneration and destruction. As a result, disorders related to food intake may occur. This is why you should start treatment as early as possible.
Bruxism treatment
After the diagnosis, a detailed treatment is planned. The treatment of bruxism consists primarily of the use of protrusion splints, which the patient applies at night. Their job is to stop the process of teeth grinding. Since bruxism is often caused by stress, it is advisable to start relaxation therapy at the same time. Herbal teas and activities such as yoga or running will be very helpful. When the condition is significantly reduced or completely eliminated, next steps can be taken.
If the damage is significant, our dentists can restore your teeth. Using CAD/CAM technology, we will design and create porcelain crowns that will make you proud again and bring a wonderful smile on your face.
