Comfortable and pain-free in our clinic Materna Dental Poznan
At Materna Dental Clinic in Poznan, we recognise and appreciate that dental phobia or a fear of the dentist is a very common anxiety, which many of our patients experience. We take pride in being the ideal clinic for nervous patients as we can help you to feel comfortable and calm during our dental treatments. With the experience of a high number of procedures in sedation among our dentists you will be in safe hands.
Dental sedation involves giving you medicine to help you relax and prevent pain during dental treatment. If you have dental anxiety or a phobia of dentists and it’s preventing you from getting treatment, whether that’s replacing a missing tooth, a hygienist clean, or having an extraction, sedation can help.
If you have a strong gag reflex, require complex treatment, or have a low pain threshold and topical local anesthetic isn’t enough, sedation may also be suitable.
Computer anesthesia – The Wand
The Wand is essentially a computer-controlled dental injection that was specifically developed to replace the old fashioned syringe system and avoid all related challenges related to its use. Many people who have had a bad experience with injections think that needles sting because the skin is pierced, but this is usually not so. Mostly, the stinging sensation is caused by the anesthetic being put in too quickly. The introduction of the device has realized the possibility of completely painless injections.
With The Wand, the flow rate of the local anesthetic is controlled by a computer. This means that the injection is guaranteed to be slow and steady and therefore comfortable. The device is also more accurate in locating the exact place where the anesthetic would provide the most benefit to the patient. Patients are completely relaxed during the entire treatment process and need minimal time for recovery. With the use of The Wand, patients may not even be aware that an anesthetic has been administered.
As you can see in the photo, the “hardware” looks similar to a miniature computer tower with brightly coloured buttons. On the top of the tower sits a cartridge with local anesthetic. A tube connects this to a pen-like handpiece.
Conscious sedation – Master Flux Plus
Conscious Sedation can be defined as: “A technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the central nervous system enabling treatment to be carried out, but during which verbal contact with the patient is maintained throughout the period of sedation.”
Best solution for patients who have a fear of the dentist
Up to 30% of adults and children have some form of fear or anxiety related to dental treatment. There is substantial evidence that these patients will benefit from conscious sedation with nitrous oxide (N2 O), also known as “laughing gas”. This form of sedation is extremely safe and efficient in the trained dentists’ hands. It is also suitable for all patients.
Conscious sedation has been a widely used technique across the world for a number of years. The controlled administration of inhaled oxygen and nitrous oxide induces a sense of relaxation, reducing emotional charge, pain perception and anxiety, increasing the patient’s tractability and facilitating cooperation with the dentist, while maintaining protective reflexes. The gas takes effect within a few minutes and within a short period, the effect disappears and has no side effects.
The benefits are numerous:
- Treatment of patients who are stressed and whose fear of the dentist is impossible to control.
- It is widely used in children’s dentistry – the child is relaxed and ready to cooperate with the dentist
- Patients are losing the notion of time, facilitating long surgical treatments.
- Increased analgesic effect – the ability to stop or reduce pain
An additional advantage of using ”laughing gas” is to completely eliminate “gag reflex” or during impression taking, which makes this procedure much more comfortable for patients.
Does inhaling this gas have any adverse reaction?
The answer is: no. Sedation causes no side effects, because the gas is not absorbed in any of the metabolic processes. All of the gas that is inhaled through the lungs will be exhaled. The only consideration and possible obstacle to using this treatment is a general medical contraindication or patients suffering from severe general diseases, are unable to walk or suffer from claustrophobia.
